Summer is one of my favorite times of year. Longer days, more time outside, trips to the beach, kids out of school… it can be wonderful. But I also know this is the season when a lot of people in Cary suddenly realize:
“Wow, my back/neck/shoulder really hurts.”
If that’s you, you’re not alone, and you’re exactly who I wrote this guide for.
My goal is simple: help you enjoy summer without being held back by pain.
Why Summer Makes Hidden Problems Show Up

All winter, many of us sit more and move less. Then summer hits and we jump straight into:
- Yard work and gardening
- Long car rides or flights
- Swimming, tennis, golf, or pickleball
- Traveling with heavy bags and luggage
Your body goes from “idle” to “overdrive” pretty fast. If your spine or joints were already a bit off, this extra activity can tip things over the edge.
Common summer complaints I hear in the office:
- “My lower back started hurting after yard work.”
- “My neck is killing me after that long drive.”
- “I twisted funny in the pool and now my shoulder won’t calm down.”
These are all signs your body is asking for some help and alignment, not just “getting older.”
How Chiropractic Helps You Move Better (So Summer Feels Better)
Let’s keep this simple.
When your spine and joints move the way they’re supposed to:
- Muscles don’t have to work as hard
- Nerves can do their job without irritation
- You can twist, bend, and play with less pain
That’s what chiropractic care is really about. It’s not just “cracking backs.” It’s restoring normal motion so your body can do what it was designed to do.

When you come see us at Cary Chiropractic and Massage in Cary, NC, here’s what you can expect:
- We talk first.
I want to hear your story, where it hurts, when it started, what you do for work, what you enjoy. - We examine, gently.
I check how your spine and muscles are moving. I’m looking for areas that are tight, stuck, or overworked. - We build a simple plan.
No scare tactics, no pressure. Just a clear explanation of what I see and how we can help. - We adjust with intention.
I use gentle, focused adjustments to restore motion. You may feel lighter, more relaxed, or like you can finally move again.
The goal: help you feel better this season, not “someday.”
Why I Often Pair Chiropractic with Massage
Here’s the truth: tight muscles and misaligned joints like to team up and cause trouble.
- Joints get stuck: muscles tighten to protect them
- Muscles stay tight: joints stop moving well
That’s why combining chiropractic care with massage therapy works so well, especially in the summer when you’re more active.
Massage can help:
- Release stubborn muscle knots
- Improve circulation
- Calm your nervous system
- Support better posture
When we adjust your spine and also relax the muscles, your body has a much easier time holding the changes. It’s like giving your system a fresh reset.
Dry Needling: When Muscles Just Won’t Let Go
Sometimes, a muscle knot is so deep or so stubborn that massage alone can’t quite get it. That’s where dry needling can make a big difference.

Dry needling uses a very thin needle to target those tight spots (trigger points) in the muscle. It can:
- Reduce deep, nagging tension
- Improve range of motion
- Help chronic pain finally start to ease
I don’t recommend it for everyone, but for the right person, it can be a game-changer, especially if you’re trying to stay active all summer.
If You’ve Been in a Car or Motorcycle Accident
Summer means more travel, and sometimes, more accidents.
If you’ve been in a motor vehicle accident (even a “small” one), please don’t brush it off. Whiplash, back pain, and headaches can show up days or weeks later.
Red flags I want you to pay attention to:
- New neck or back pain, sometimes sharp or just constant, after an accident
- Headaches that weren’t there before
- Trouble sleeping because of pain
- Feeling “off” when you turn or bend
We see a lot of accident-related cases here in Cary. You don’t need to “push through it” or wait to see if it gets worse. The earlier we look at it, the better your chances of healing well.
Simple Summer Habits to Protect Your Back and Neck
Here are a few things I tell my own patients in Cary, NC when summer hits:
- Take breaks from yard work.
Set a timer for 20–30 minutes. Stand up, stretch, walk around. Don’t wait until you’re already hurting. - Watch the “car crunch.”
Long drives? Adjust your seat, keep your hips level, and use a small towel or lumbar support behind your lower back. - Alternate sides with bags.
Purse, backpack, beach bag, switch sides often so you’re not overloading one shoulder. - Warm up before you play.
A few minutes of gentle stretching before swimming, golf, or tennis can save you a lot of pain later. - Stay hydrated.
Muscles and joints are happier when you’re not dehydrated. Your body really does move better with enough water.
My Story, and Why I Care So Much About This
I started chiropractic care when I was 17 after a shoulder dislocation that traditional care just couldn’t fix. Chiropractic changed my life. It gave me back movement, and hope.
That experience is why I’m so passionate about what I do today at Cary Chiropractic and Massage. I don’t see “cases.” I see people who want their lives back:
- Parents who want to pick up their kids without pain
- Grandparents who want to travel and play
- Weekend warriors who don’t want to be sidelined
- Patients who are just tired of “putting up with it”
Life is short. I want you to be able to enjoy it, especially in a season as fun as summer.
